27th May 2009 Visit to the home of the Lord Mayor’s Bodyguard - Monday 6th July 2009 - Coupled with a Wine Tasting with a difference Dear Member The Master invites you to The Honourable Artillery Company (HAC), the home of The Lord Mayor’s Bodyguard situated at Armoury House City Road London EC1 on Monday the 6th July 2009 commencing at 18:00 hours, to tour the House and see and meet members of this unique body. The Members of The Lord Mayor’s Bodyguard, The Company of Pikemen and Musketeers, are recruited from Regimental Veteran Members of the HAC, the oldest regiment in the British Army and the senior regiment in the Territorial Army. The HAC can trace its history back to 1537 when Henry VIII granted a Royal Charter to the Guild of St George. Today the HAC is a TA regiment made up of around 400 civilians who regularly train in their spare time. The HAC’s role encompasses surveillance and target acquisition patrols as well as ceremonial duties in London. HAC soldiers have in recent times been on active service in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Company of Pikemen and Musketeers, one of the five military warranted bodies, was re-formed in 1925 to act as a ceremonial body and granted a Royal Warrant in 1955 entitling the Company to parade in uniform with a maximum of 63 all ranks, this being the size of an equivalent company in the 17th Century. The uniform, armour, equipment and music date from the reign of Charles I and the drills and orders are taken from a drill manual by Colonel William Bariffe (a member of the HAC) which was published in 1647 and the drill movements are carried out to the beat of a drum. The Company has been The Lord Mayor’s bodyguard since 1933. The evening will commence with of a tour of Armoury House and the Pikemen’s armoury followed by a short display of 17th Century drills. There will then be a buffet reception at which it is intended to have a shortened version of the Wine Tasting Evening, which had to be cancelled at short notice due to the G20 demonstrations. All those attending will be invited to meet the Pikemen not only whilst on parade but as guests of the Ward Club during the Reception. The evening will conclude at approximately 21:30 hours. Armoury House is easily accessible by public transport. The nearest underground stations are Moorgate (Circle, Northern and Hammersmith & City Lines) and Old Street (Northern Line) and is just about a 15 minute walk from Liverpool Street railway station. Buses 21 43 76 141 205 214 stop more or less outside Finsbury Barracks which abuts City Road, behind which Armoury House is situated. The cost of the event is £39.50, which includes a £1 donation for the Red Cross in lieu of our biennial fund raising dinner - this will be a feature of every event this year. Inter-Ward Quiz - We are in the process of an Inter-Ward Quiz that will take place in the evening of Monday 7th September in the 14thC Barnard's Inn Hall, Gresham College, Holborn. Regrettably numbers this year will be limited to approx 6 representatives per Ward.
